Pennsylvania Horse Shows Association
Open Forum Minutes
Date: September 9, 2003
Location: Alumni Hall, New Bolton Center
Sue Hansen distributed statistics showing that the web site has enjoyed 452,550 hits between October ’02 and September ’03. The site now has pages for the PHSA horse show calendar, an explanation of how PHSA points are calculated, a news section and the updated points, which are posted twice monthly. There was a discussion about web site advertising. With the quantity of hits & the fact that people visiting the web site are members of the target audiences for tack shops, feed stores, tack manufacturers, etc. we may be able to attract advertisers. Sue will investigate the advertising costs for the next meeting.
Treasurer’s Report
Doris MacDonald, standing in for Barbara Miller, presented the treasurer’s report. Doris reported:
Current money market account balance $25,870.76
Current checking account balance $15,001.89
Total $40,872.65
There was $24,493.30 of income from 2/03 through 8/03 consisting of income from membership, horse registration, pony registration, horse/pony transfers, horse show registrations and the banquet.
There was $22,537.64 of disbursements from 2/03 through 8/03 consisting of disbursements for office expense, web site, advertising, legal and accounting fees and the banquet.
Breeding Committee
Doris MacDonald reported that the Young Hunter Pony Under Saddle is a PHSA division without a year-end trophy. Ecurie Fairmount and Sue Hansen will donate that trophy. Doris also gave a summary of the increased number of breeding members for 2003.
2002 2003
140 breeding memberships 153
96 breeding horses 90
21 breeding ponies 38
19 farm memberships 42
Banquet Committee
Audrey Winzinger announced that the 2003 awards dinner would be held at Normandy Farm in Blue Bell, Penna, a fully restored historic property that recently opened at the corner of Morris Rd. & Rt. 202. The adult ticket prices will be raised slightly to $50 and the children’s tickets will remain the same price ($18).
The champions will receive a monogrammed garment bag from The Clothes Horse, a cash award, a ribbon and in most cases a Challenge or Perpetual Trophy. Reserve champions will receive a ribbon, a cash award and a beveled glass top table from Manse Hill Silver.
New Business
Jennifer Batchelor read a recent set of board meeting minutes which made mention of naming a PHSA horse show of the year. Jennifer has offered to work on this project. She will develop criteria for choosing a horse show of the year and she will investigate an appropriate award for the chosen show. The board indicated their interest in announcing the specifics of this program at the awards dinner.
Patti Lechmanik questioned the PHSA class specifications regarding pre-adult hunters. She recently attended a PHSA show holding a pre-adult division described by class specifications not matching those of PHSA’s. The board suggested that Patti check the web site for a copy of the PHSA pre-adult class spec & to confirm that the show was PHSA recognized. If the show was PHSA recognized, and the class spec did not match that of PHSA, then the classes should not generate PHSA points. This issue will be referred to Diane Boram. Although, this issue prompted the question of whether a PHSA show is issued a set of PHSA specs prior to their prize list being printed. Audrey will check with Diane to determine exactly what materials are given to the PHSA shows.
Sue Hansen suggested that PHSA develop a Pennsylvania Pony Breeders division, which would offer classes, much like the classes for Pa. Bred horses. Sue will check into how the Virginia Pony Breeders Association and the Maryland Pony Breeders Association work. There was support for this addition at the Open Forum. Doris will organize a meeting of the breeding committee to further develop this idea.
